PMW’s FAVORITE SONGS OF 2012 (pt. 2 // #1-20)

And so, here it is - my last year-end-list and the conclusion of my Favorite Songs of 2012 (#21-50 Here). As I stated before, it’s difficult to break down a solid reasoning by any number placement, so my back thirty were posted alphabetically - here, I’m trying to stick to more of a numerical order based on plays, release, and general impact. It’s the best way that I could compile a list of songs loaded with such incredible beauty, energy, and talent. So, this is my favorite twenty songs of 2012, in order of preference on this day (12.10.12), with full understanding that the order could very well shift by the time you read this - but with hope that you’ll find something that excites or inspires along the way.

As before, a click of the track title will send you to the original posting with my original thoughts and streaming audio. Additional thoughts will be written where needed. The original podcast intended for this release will be going up later on in the month, as I’m presently having mic issues which are causing a problematic product. In the end, you can listen to each track through the links contained. Thank you for your support through another year of stellar music. You guys make the process of music discovery even more fun and exciting. Please share, reblog, and post your own lists - I love reading and comparing favorites.

PLAYLIST: (Click for streaming link // Full Spotify playlist link at bottom)

Thank you very much for listening, stay tuned in the next coupe of days for the big closeout - The Top 20 Favorite Songs of 2012, complete with podcast commentary and write up. Enjoy!

THE HAUNTING SOUNDS // A Halloween Mixtape - Vol. One
It is that time of year again and therefore it’s time to start bathing and living in all things Halloween. In an effort to get your ears in on the game, I’ve put together a series of Mixtapes that I will be releasing throughout the month. These mixtapes all revolve around the best holiday of the year, but each mix in particular will carry it’s own particular vibe/genre. Volume One is comprised of songs that lean on the rock and roll side of things. Garage rock, surf rock, jangle pop, experimental rock - all filtered through a Halloween lens. The next set will come out early next week and be of the post-punk/ new wave nature.
Below you will find a zip file and an mp3 file for your downloading pleasure. The MP3 is one long mix, while the other is individual tracks. Enjoy and please don’t be afraid to reblog and share with friends to help celebrate this fantastic time of year.

Please support the artists that you find and enjoy. Buy their music, merchandise and tickets to see their shows. Supporting them is the only purpose in doing this blog. Contrary to the opinions of some, music blogs are a great way to discover new music, but there will only be so much new music to go around if these artists can’t afford to support themselves through their art and commerce. Only use these mixtapes as a guide to find something to throw your (financial and emotional) support behind.

Their songs are built from moody, improvised sessions together using exclusively electronic instruments- mostly analog and vintage.

Soft Metals is signed to Captured Tracks and released their first record, an 5 song EP titled “The Cold World Melts” in July 2010. Their debut self-titled album came out in July of 2011. FACT magazine called Soft Metals “one of the most accomplished and ambitious of the myriad new synth-pop acts coming out of the States.” The duo have played shows on both coasts of the US and in Mexico City. They have shared the stage with bands ranging from HEALTH and Nitzer Ebb to Glass Candy and Chromatics.

exfm:

Every month we bring on an interwebs music aficionado to make an exclusive mixtape for our community. This month one of our favorite collectivesPORTALS has taken on the task of hand-picking fifteen songs for our July Mix.

We’ve had a long standing relationship with the PORTALS crew. Many of them helped launch our Site Player and when they officially launched their collective site they opted once again to go the exfm route. We’re overjoyed that they’ve created this mixtape for us and can’t wait to continue collaborating with them from now until the end of time!
